How Do You Measure AEO and AI Search Visibility?

A practical, tool-agnostic framework for tracking citations, AI referrals and brand mentions across answer engines

•Manav Sharma

Measure AEO with a fixed prompt set, AI referral traffic in analytics, Search Console question queries and citation logs. A step-by-step framework.

You measure AEO by combining four signals: a fixed set of target prompts checked on a schedule for citations, referral sessions from AI assistants in your analytics, Search Console data for question-style queries, and trends in branded search. No single tool sees every answer engine, so a simple, repeatable process matters more than any one dashboard.

Most teams start AEO work and then struggle to prove it is doing anything. This guide gives you a measurement setup you can run with free tools, and explains the limits of each signal so you do not over-read the numbers.

Why is AEO harder to measure than SEO?

Traditional SEO has a stable unit: a ranked URL for a query. AEO does not, for three reasons:

  • Answers are generated. The same prompt can produce different answers and different citations from one session to the next.
  • Many engines, little reporting. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features each surface sources differently, and few provide publisher-side reports.
  • Zero-click value. A citation can build awareness even when no one clicks, so traffic alone undercounts impact.

The answer is to measure trends across a consistent sample, not to chase a single precise number.

What should you track? The four-signal framework

  1. Citation rate on a fixed prompt set. The share of your target prompts where your domain is cited or your brand is named.
  2. AI referral traffic. Sessions arriving from assistant domains, and what those visitors do next.
  3. Search Console question queries. Impressions, clicks and position for queries containing question words. Google states that traffic from its AI features is included in the Performance report (source).
  4. Branded demand. Branded search impressions over time, which often rise when a brand is mentioned more in answers.

Together these tell you whether you are being seen, chosen and visited.

How do you build a prompt set?

A prompt set is a list of questions you want to be the answer to. Build it once, then keep it stable so month-over-month comparisons are meaningful.

  1. Collect candidates from Search Console queries, People Also Ask boxes, sales call notes and support tickets.
  2. Group by intent: definitions, how-to, comparisons, cost and timeline, vendor selection.
  3. Map each prompt to one target page on your site. If no page fits, that is a content gap.
  4. Write prompts naturally, the way a buyer would type or speak them, including context such as company size or tool stack.
  5. Keep 20 to 50 prompts for a small B2B site. More is hard to check consistently.
  6. Version the list. If you add or remove prompts, note the date so trends are not distorted.

How do you check citations consistently?

Consistency beats volume. A workable monthly routine:

  1. Use a clean session (logged out or a fresh profile) to reduce personalisation.
  2. Run each prompt in the engines that matter to your buyers, typically Google (AI Overviews or AI Mode), ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot.
  3. Record four fields per prompt and engine: cited (yes/no), cited URL, brand named in text (yes/no), and which competitors or sources were cited.
  4. Store results in a spreadsheet or your CRM, one row per prompt, engine and date.
  5. Calculate citation rate as cited prompts divided by total prompts, per engine and overall.

Commercial AEO tracking tools can automate this at scale. They are useful, but each samples differently, so keep a small manual check as a sanity baseline.

How do you see AI referral traffic in analytics?

Most assistants pass a referrer when a user clicks a cited link, though not always. In GA4 or a similar tool:

  • Create a channel group or segment for referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com.
  • Check landing pages to learn which content is being cited and clicked.
  • Watch engagement and conversions, not just sessions. AI-referred visitors often arrive with a specific question already answered.
  • Expect undercounting. Some app-based clicks arrive without a referrer and land in direct traffic.

If you run a CRM, capture the first-touch referrer on form submissions so you can see whether AI-referred visitors become leads. Our guide to web form CRM integration without lost leads shows how to pass that data through reliably.

How do you use Search Console for AEO?

Search Console does not separate AI Overview impressions today, but it is still the richest first-party dataset you have:

  1. Filter queries by regex for question words, for example: ^(how|what|why|which|when|can|does|is|should) .
  2. Compare pages you restructured for AEO against similar pages you have not touched.
  3. Track position and impressions for those queries over 28-day windows.
  4. Look for new long, conversational queries appearing; these often reflect how people phrase questions to assistants.

What does a simple AEO report look like?

Keep the monthly report to one page. A useful structure, presented as a list rather than a dense table:

  • Citation rate: overall and per engine, with last month for comparison.
  • New citations won and citations lost, with the URLs involved.
  • Top cited pages by number of prompts.
  • AI referral sessions and leads, by landing page.
  • Question-query impressions and clicks from Search Console.
  • Branded search impressions trend.
  • Actions for next month: pages to restructure, gaps to fill, facts to correct.

What mistakes distort AEO measurement?

  • Changing the prompt list every month, which makes trends meaningless.
  • Checking while logged in, which can personalise results.
  • Counting only clicks, which ignores brand mentions without links.
  • Ignoring accuracy. Log when an assistant states something wrong about you, and fix the source page.
  • Attributing everything to AEO. Seasonality, product launches and PR also move branded demand.

Key takeaways

  • AEO measurement combines citation rate, AI referral traffic, Search Console question queries and branded demand.
  • Build a stable set of 20 to 50 prompts, each mapped to a target page.
  • Check prompts monthly in clean sessions and record citations, URLs and competitors.
  • Segment assistant referrers in analytics and capture them in your CRM.
  • Report trends on one page, with clear actions for the next cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official AI Overviews report in Search Console?

Not as a separate report at the time of writing. Google states that AI feature traffic is included in the overall Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, so you see it combined with regular search data.

How often should I check my prompt set?

Monthly is a practical cadence for most B2B sites. Answers fluctuate day to day, so weekly checks add noise without much insight. Check sooner after a major content change or a notable product or pricing update.

Do I need a paid AEO tracking tool?

Not to start. A spreadsheet, a fixed prompt list and analytics segments cover the basics. Paid tools help when you track hundreds of prompts or many markets, but they sample differently, so keep a small manual baseline.

Why does my traffic from ChatGPT look so low?

Many answers are consumed without a click, and some app-based clicks arrive without a referrer, landing in direct traffic. Track citation rate and branded search alongside sessions to get a fuller picture.

What is a good citation rate?

There is no reliable public benchmark, and results vary by topic and engine. Use your own baseline from the first month and focus on direction of travel, especially for the prompts closest to revenue.
