Semantic caching stores past LLM answers and reuses one when a new question means the same thing as an earlier question, even if the wording differs. It works by turning each query into an embedding, searching for a close match above a similarity threshold, and returning the stored answer instead of calling the model. It cuts cost and latency for repetitive questions, but a loose threshold returns wrong answers, so tune it on real traffic.

Semantic caching vs exact caching vs prompt caching

  • Exact caching returns a stored response only when the input text is identical. It is safe but rarely hits for questions typed by people.
  • Semantic caching matches by meaning, so "how do I reset my password" and "forgot password, what now" can share one answer.
  • Provider prompt caching (offered by OpenAI and Anthropic) is different: the provider reuses the processing of a repeated prompt prefix, such as a long system prompt, to reduce cost and latency. The model still generates a fresh answer. You can use it alongside a semantic cache.

How a semantic cache works

  1. Normalise the query. Trim, lower-case where it is safe, and strip volatile parts such as timestamps.
  2. Embed it with an embedding model.
  3. Search a vector index for the nearest stored query. Redis, a vector database or a library such as GPTCache can do this.
  4. Compare the similarity score with a threshold. Above it, return the cached answer. Below it, call the model.
  5. Store the new query, its embedding, the answer and metadata such as the model version and creation time.

Where it helps and where it does not

It helps where many people ask the same things: help centre questions, internal policy lookups, product information. It is a poor fit when answers depend on the user, on live data or on the exact wording, for example "what is my order status" or a calculation with different numbers. Never share cached answers across users when the answer contains personal or account data.

Tuning the threshold

  • Collect a sample of real query pairs and label which ones should share an answer.
  • Test thresholds against that set and pick the one that keeps false matches very low. A wrong cached answer costs more than a missed cache hit.
  • Re-test when you change the embedding model, because scores are not comparable across models.

Keeping the cache correct

  • Set a time to live so answers expire when the underlying content may have changed.
  • Clear related entries when you update a source document or the model.
  • Scope the cache key: include tenant, language and any setting that changes the answer.
  • Log hits with their similarity score and let users flag bad answers, so you can find false matches.

How to measure the benefit

Track hit rate, the cost and latency saved per hit, and the rate of flagged or corrected cached answers. Decide in advance what false-match rate is acceptable. If hit rate stays low, exact caching plus provider prompt caching may be enough.

Frequently asked questions

Does semantic caching reduce quality?

It can if the threshold is too loose. With a strict threshold, scoped keys and expiry, it returns the same answer the model gave before.

Is a semantic cache the same as RAG?

No. RAG retrieves documents to help the model write a new answer; a semantic cache returns a previous answer instead of calling the model.
