What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
A practical definition of AEO, how it differs from SEO, and where B2B teams should start
AEO is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines can extract, trust and cite it. Learn how it differs from SEO and how to start.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content, site and brand signals so that AI-driven answer engines (Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot) can find a clear answer on your page, trust it, and cite it. It builds on SEO, but the goal shifts from ranking a link to being the quoted source.
For a consultancy like ours, the question we hear most is not "should we do AEO?" but "what do we actually change on our site?" This guide answers that in plain terms, without hype, and points you to the primary documentation published by the search and AI companies themselves.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO and AEO share a foundation, but they optimise for different outcomes.
- SEO aims to rank a URL in a list of results and win the click. It leans on relevance, links, technical health and page experience.
- AEO aims to have your content selected as a source inside a generated answer. It leans on extractable answers, unambiguous structure, factual accuracy and recognisable authority.
- Overlap: Google states that the same fundamentals apply to its AI features as to Search in general. There is no separate "AI markup" you must add. See Google's guidance on AI features and your website.
In practice, AEO is SEO with a sharper editorial discipline: every important question gets a short, self-contained answer that a machine can lift without needing the rest of the page.
What counts as an "answer engine"?
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a composed answer rather than only a list of links. Today that includes:
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which draw on Google's search index.
- ChatGPT search, which uses OpenAI's crawler and search partners. OpenAI documents its crawlers (including OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot) on its bots page.
- Perplexity, which documents PerplexityBot in its crawler guide.
- Microsoft Copilot and Bing, which rely on the Bing index and Bing's webmaster guidelines.
- Classic answer surfaces such as featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes, which predate generative AI but reward the same structure. See Google's featured snippets documentation.
Each engine weighs signals differently, but none of them can cite a page they cannot crawl, and none of them reliably cite a page whose answer is buried.
Why does AEO matter for B2B service companies?
B2B buyers increasingly ask an assistant to shortlist vendors, explain a concept or compare tools before they ever visit a website. If your page is the one cited, your brand appears in that early research moment even when no click happens.
That changes what "visibility" means:
- Impressions without clicks become meaningful, because the brand mention itself carries value.
- Accuracy matters more, because an assistant may repeat whatever your page says about pricing, scope or capability.
- Depth beats volume. One clear, well-structured page on a question tends to be more citable than five thin variants of it.
What are the core building blocks of AEO?
Think of AEO as five layers. Skip one and the others work harder.
- Access. Make sure the crawlers you care about are not blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall. Google's robots.txt guide explains the rules; OpenAI and Perplexity publish their user agents.
- Answer-first structure. Open each page and each key section with a 40 to 60 word direct answer, then expand with steps, examples and caveats.
- Question-shaped headings. Phrase H2s the way people ask: "How long does a HubSpot migration take?" rather than "Timelines".
- Structured data. Use schema.org types such as BlogPosting, Organization and, where it genuinely fits, FAQPage. Structured data helps machines understand a page; it is not a ranking shortcut.
- Authority and consistency. Name a real author with real experience, keep facts consistent across your site and profiles, and cite primary sources. Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content is the best public summary of what "trustworthy" means.
How do you write an answer an AI can cite?
A citable answer is short, specific and self-contained. Use this pattern for every priority question:
- Restate the question in the heading.
- Answer in the first sentence. Lead with the conclusion, not background.
- Qualify it. Add the one or two conditions that change the answer ("for teams under 20 users", "if you already use Odoo Inventory").
- Support it. Follow with a numbered process, a comparison list, or a link to a primary source.
- Avoid pronouns that depend on earlier context. "It" and "this" force the reader (and the model) to look elsewhere.
A quick test: copy the first paragraph of a section into a blank document. If it still makes sense and answers the question on its own, it is extractable.
Which pages should you optimise for AEO first?
Start where demand already exists. Good sources of real questions are:
- Google Search Console query data, filtered for queries containing how, what, why, which, can, does or vs. Our guide to finding and fixing indexing problems in Search Console covers the setup.
- People Also Ask boxes for your core service terms.
- Sales and support conversations. The questions prospects email you are the questions they ask assistants.
- Your own service pages. These often describe what you do but never answer "how much", "how long" or "what is included".
Prioritise pages that already rank on page one or two. They are already trusted enough to be retrieved; better structure is often all they need.
How do you know if AEO is working?
AEO measurement is still maturing, so combine several imperfect signals rather than trusting one dashboard:
- Search Console impressions and clicks for question-style queries. Google notes that AI feature traffic is included in the overall Search performance report.
- Referral traffic in analytics from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and similar domains.
- Manual prompt checks. Keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 prompts and record, monthly, whether your domain is cited.
- Branded search trend. Brand mentions inside answers often show up later as branded searches.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a default CDN bot-protection rule.
- Writing for the machine instead of the reader. Stuffing a page with 40 FAQs does not make it more citable; it makes it less useful.
- Inventing numbers. Unsourced statistics are the fastest way to lose trust with both people and models.
- Treating schema as magic. Google has limited FAQ rich results to a small set of authoritative sites since 2023 (announcement); markup still helps understanding but rarely changes the visual result.
- Letting facts drift. If your pricing page and your blog disagree, an assistant may quote the wrong one.
Key takeaways
- AEO is about being the cited source in AI answers, not just a ranked link.
- It builds on SEO fundamentals; Google says no special AI markup is required.
- Lead every important section with a 40 to 60 word, self-contained answer.
- Use question-shaped H2s, schema.org markup and a real, named author.
- Check robots.txt and firewall rules so answer-engine crawlers can reach you.
- Measure with a mix of Search Console, AI referral traffic and manual prompt tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO depends on SEO. Answer engines retrieve pages from search indexes or their own crawls, so a page that is not crawlable, indexable and relevant will not be cited. AEO adds an editorial layer on top: clearer answers, question-based structure and stronger trust signals.
Do I need special code or markup for AI Overviews?
Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data is still worth adding because it clarifies what a page is about, but it is not a separate entry ticket.
How long does AEO take to show results?
There is no reliable public benchmark. Pages that already rank tend to be picked up faster after restructuring because they are already being crawled and retrieved. Track a fixed prompt list monthly so you can see change over time rather than guessing.
Should I block GPTBot or other AI crawlers?
It depends on your goals. OpenAI separates its search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) from its training crawler (GPTBot), so you can allow one and disallow the other. If you want to be cited in ChatGPT search, do not block the search crawler.
Can a small B2B company compete in AEO?
Yes. Answer engines cite pages that answer a specific question well, not only big brands. A focused consultancy page that explains one integration or one process clearly can be more useful, and more citable, than a generic article on a large site.
