How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
A step-by-step plan to earn citations in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers.
To get your brand cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, you need three things: AI crawlers must be able to reach your pages, your pages must contain short, sourced answers to the exact questions people ask, and other trusted sites must already mention you. Each AI engine runs a live search before it answers, picks a handful of pages, and quotes the passages that answer the question most clearly. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of becoming one of those pages.
This guide explains what changed in AI search in 2026, how each engine picks its sources, a step-by-step plan to earn LLM citations, a checklist you can run this week, and the mistakes that quietly keep brands out of AI answers.
Quick answer
1. Allow OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot (Perplexity) and Googlebot (AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini's Google Search grounding) in robots.txt and your CDN. 2. Make sure your key pages are indexed in Google and Bing. 3. Rewrite key pages so each heading is a real question and the first sentence under it is the answer. 4. Add sourced statistics, quotations and links to primary sources; in the original GEO study this lifted visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing made things worse. 5. Earn mentions on the third-party sites AI engines already trust: reviews, comparison lists, community threads and video. 6. Test your priority prompts every month and track which pages get cited.
What changed in AI search in 2026?
Three shifts make LLM citations matter more this year than last.
- AI answers come first. Google now shows AI Overviews on many queries and offers AI Mode for longer, multi-step questions. ChatGPT and Perplexity answer with cited sources by default when they search the web. Buyers increasingly read an answer before they ever see a list of links.
- Answers are built from many searches, not one. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build one response. Your page can be cited for a sub-question you never targeted, and missed for the main one.
- Crawler controls got more granular. OpenAI now separates OAI-SearchBot (for showing sites in ChatGPT search) from GPTBot (for model training). Blocking the wrong one can remove you from ChatGPT answers entirely.
The upshot: ranking well in classic search is still the entry ticket, but being cited depends on whether an AI engine can lift a clean, trustworthy passage from your page. If you are new to the idea, start with our guide on what answer engine optimization (AEO) is.
How do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity choose which sources to cite?
All three follow a similar pattern, often called retrieval-augmented generation: understand the question, search the web, read the top results, then write an answer grounded in those results with inline citations. The differences are in where they search and which crawlers they use.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT search shows websites based on OpenAI's own crawling and search partners. OpenAI's documentation is explicit: sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot is separate and controls training only, so you can block training and still be eligible for citations. OpenAI notes robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect for search.
Gemini and Google AI Overviews
Google's AI features draw on Google Search. Google states there are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google also says you do not need special AI text files, new markup or special schema to appear. Your Googlebot access, indexing and snippet settings are the controls that matter. Google-Extended is a separate control for training and grounding in some of Google's other AI systems, and it is not a Search ranking signal.
Perplexity
Perplexity runs its own index and live web lookups. Its documentation describes PerplexityBot as the crawler used to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results, and Perplexity-User as the agent for fetches a user triggers. If PerplexityBot cannot reach you, you are unlikely to be cited.
What all three reward
The 2024 KDD paper that coined generative engine optimization tested nine content changes against a benchmark of 10,000 queries. Adding citations to credible sources, quotations and statistics gave the biggest lifts, about 30-40% on its main visibility measure. Keyword stuffing performed worse than doing nothing. A useful finding for smaller brands: the "Cite Sources" change raised visibility for pages ranked fifth in search by 115.1%, while the top-ranked page lost visibility on average. Good sourcing helps you compete with bigger sites.
How do I get my brand cited by AI? A step-by-step plan
Step 1: Make sure AI crawlers can reach you
Open your robots.txt and confirm you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot. Then check your CDN, firewall or bot-protection settings, because many block AI crawlers by default even when robots.txt allows them. Google lists "crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure" as a basic requirement. Decide on training bots like GPTBot separately; that choice does not affect ChatGPT search eligibility.
Step 2: Get indexed in Google and Bing
Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and fix any pages that are not indexed. A page that is not in the index cannot be retrieved, so it cannot be cited. Keep important content in plain HTML text, not hidden inside images, PDFs or scripts that crawlers struggle to render.
Step 3: Find the questions your buyers actually ask
People type full questions into AI tools, not two-word keywords. Collect them from your sales calls, support tickets, Google's People Also Ask boxes, and community threads where your buyers hang out. Group them into a list of 20-50 priority prompts, such as "what is the best way to..." or "X vs Y for...". These become both your content plan and your test set.
Step 4: Write answer-first pages
AI engines quote passages, not whole pages. For each priority question:
- Use the question itself as an H2 or H3 heading.
- Answer it in the first one or two sentences, in plain language, so the passage makes sense on its own.
- Follow with the detail: steps, trade-offs, numbers and examples.
- Add a short FAQ for the related questions people ask next.
A definition-first sentence like "X is... It works by..." is far easier to lift into an answer than a paragraph that builds up to the point.
Step 5: Add evidence AI engines can trust
Back every claim with a primary source and link to it. Use real numbers with dates. Quote named experts or official documentation where it helps. Publish your own data when you have it, such as survey results, benchmarks or before-and-after results, because original data gives AI engines a reason to cite you rather than a competitor who repeats the same advice. Keep facts current and show a visible "last updated" date.
Step 6: Build presence on the sites AI already trusts
For broad questions, AI engines often cite encyclopedias, community forums, video platforms, review sites and industry comparison lists instead of brand websites. GEO therefore has an off-site half:
- Get listed accurately on the review and comparison sites your category is researched through.
- Take part in relevant community discussions as a practitioner, disclose who you work for, and never post fake reviews or sock-puppet accounts.
- Publish how-to and comparison videos with clear titles and descriptions.
- Pitch expert commentary to publications your buyers read.
- Keep your company name, description and key facts consistent everywhere, so AI engines connect the mentions to one brand.
Step 7: Test, measure and refresh
Run your priority prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews every month. Record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your page is cited, and which competitor or third-party page is cited instead. Pages that win citations show you what works; pages that lose them tell you what to update. For a full measurement setup, see our guide on how to measure AEO and AI search visibility.
The AI citation readiness checklist
Run this checklist against your ten most important pages. Each "no" is a reason an AI engine may skip you.
- Access: OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot are allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your CDN or firewall.
- Indexing: The page is indexed in Google and Bing and can show a snippet (no stray noindex or nosnippet).
- Text: The main content is in HTML text, not only in images, PDFs or tabs that need scripts to load.
- Question headings: Headings match questions real people ask, in their words.
- Answer first: The first sentence under each heading answers the question on its own.
- Evidence: Every number has a date and a link to a primary source.
- Originality: The page has at least one thing competitors do not: your own data, a framework, a checklist or first-hand experience.
- Freshness: Facts are current and the page shows when it was last updated.
- Structured data: Any schema you use matches the visible text on the page.
- Internal links: Related pages link to each other with descriptive anchor text.
- Brand consistency: Your name, description and key facts match across your site, profiles and listings.
- Third-party proof: At least a few independent, trusted sites mention you for this topic.
Common mistakes that keep brands out of AI answers
- Blocking all AI bots at once. A blanket block in robots.txt or a CDN "block AI crawlers" switch can remove you from ChatGPT search and Perplexity. Block training bots if you wish, but allow search crawlers.
- Chasing "AI files" instead of basics. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or special schema for AI Overviews. Indexing, clear content and access matter far more.
- Keyword stuffing. In the GEO study, stuffing in query keywords reduced visibility in generative answers. Write for the question, not the keyword count.
- Burying the answer. Long intros, marketing copy and "it depends" openings give AI engines nothing clean to quote.
- Unsourced claims. Numbers without sources are less useful to an engine trying to give a grounded answer, and risky for you if they are wrong.
- Ignoring off-site mentions. If no one else talks about you, AI engines have little reason to recommend you, however good your own pages are.
- Measuring only clicks. AI answers often satisfy the question without a click. Track mentions and citations, not just traffic.
- Set and forget. AI engines change their sources often. A page that was cited in spring may be replaced by a fresher one by autumn.
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. You still need crawlable, indexed, helpful pages, and Google says its SEO best practices apply to AI features. What changes is the goal and the unit of success: SEO aims for a ranked link, while generative engine optimization aims for a quoted passage or a brand mention inside an AI answer. That shifts effort toward answer-first writing, sourced evidence, off-site mentions and prompt-level testing.
Should I hire help for GEO?
You can do the basics in-house: crawler access, indexing, answer-first rewrites and monthly prompt tests. Help is useful when you need a structured prompt set, ongoing citation tracking across several AI engines, or a content and digital PR programme to earn third-party mentions. FAQ
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
There is no fixed timeline. Crawler changes can take effect quickly; OpenAI says robots.txt updates take about 24 hours for ChatGPT search. Content and reputation changes usually take longer, because pages must be recrawled and other sites must start mentioning you.
Can I pay to be cited in AI answers?
No. Citations in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews are organic. Some platforms sell ads, but ads are separate from the cited sources in an answer.
Do I need an llms.txt file to get cited?
Google says you do not need new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It will not hurt, but it is not a substitute for crawler access, indexing and clear content.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing me?
No. GPTBot controls training. OAI-SearchBot controls whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search answers. You can block one and allow the other.
Do I need special schema markup for AI Overviews?
No special schema is required. Structured data can still help search engines understand your page, but it must match the visible text.
Why does AI mention my competitor and not me?
Usually because their pages answer the question more directly, cite better evidence, or are mentioned on more trusted third-party sites. Check which page is cited, then close the gap on access, answer quality and off-site presence.
