How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: Step-by-Step Playbook
A four-week plan: crawler access, answer-first pages, verifiable evidence and a weekly test to prove ChatGPT is citing you
Learn how to get cited by ChatGPT: allow OAI-SearchBot, write answer-first pages, add verifiable proof and test with a weekly ten-prompt check.
To get cited by ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI's search crawler can read your site, publish a page that answers the exact question in its first two sentences, back it with evidence a model can verify, and then confirm the result by running the same prompts in ChatGPT every week. There is no submission form and no way to pay for a citation. What you control is whether your page is retrievable, quotable and corroborated when ChatGPT goes looking for sources.
This playbook is deliberately about ChatGPT only. If you want the cross-engine view, our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity covers all three, and our definition of answer engine optimization explains the discipline behind it. Here you get a diagnosis, a four-week plan and a way to prove it worked. For the wider programme, see our answer engine optimisation pillar page.
How does ChatGPT decide what to cite?
ChatGPT answers in two very different ways, and only one of them produces citations.
- From its trained knowledge. The model writes an answer from what it learned in training. It may name brands, but it usually shows no source links, and you cannot easily influence it in the short term.
- From a live web search. When a question needs current or specific information, ChatGPT searches the web, reads the results and writes an answer with linked sources. This is where citations come from, and it is the part you can work on this month.
So the practical question is not "how do I get into ChatGPT's brain?" but "how do I become one of the pages it reads and links when it searches?" That depends on three things: your page must be reachable by the crawler, it must contain a clear extractable answer, and other trustworthy sources should agree with it.
Step 1: Diagnose why you are not cited today
Before changing anything, find out which of the three failures you have. It saves weeks of working on the wrong thing.
Build a ten-prompt baseline
Write down ten questions a buyer would type before choosing a company like yours. Mix three types: a definition ("what is..."), a how-to ("how do I..."), and a choice ("what is the best way to...", "which tool should I use for..."). Run each in ChatGPT with web search turned on, in a fresh chat, and record three things: whether you are mentioned, whether your domain is linked as a source, and which domains are linked instead.
Read the pattern
- You are never linked, and competitors are. Usually a retrieval or content-shape problem. Go to steps 2 and 3.
- You are linked for definitions but not for choices. You have informational pages but no comparison or decision content. Go to step 5.
- You are mentioned but never linked. The model knows of you but finds nothing quotable to cite. Go to steps 3 and 4.
- Third-party sites are linked more than yours. Engines trust sources that describe you independently. Go to step 6.
Keep the sheet. It is your baseline, and the same ten prompts become your weekly test in step 7.
Step 2: Make your pages retrievable by OpenAI's crawlers
OpenAI documents separate crawlers for separate jobs on its bots page. The names matter because blocking the wrong one is a common, silent mistake.
- OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT's search results. If you block it, you should not expect to appear as a cited source in ChatGPT search.
- GPTBot is used for collecting content that may help train models. Blocking it is a separate decision about training, and it is not the same as blocking search.
- ChatGPT-User is used when a person asks ChatGPT to visit a page.
Open your robots.txt file and confirm that OAI-SearchBot is allowed. Then check three more basics that quietly remove pages from any crawler's view:
- Your key pages return a normal 200 status, not a redirect chain or an error served only to bots.
- The answer text is in the HTML that loads, not injected later by scripts that a crawler may never run.
- No page you want cited carries a noindex directive, and your firewall or bot protection does not challenge legitimate crawlers.
Changes to robots.txt are not instant, so allow a day or so before you re-test. Also keep Google and Bing indexing healthy, because search-based answers lean on the open web and a page that is invisible to major search engines is harder for any assistant to find.
Step 3: Rewrite the page so the answer is quotable
Models and the systems around them extract short passages. A page that buries its answer in the fifth paragraph hands the citation to a page that states it in the first.
Use the answer-first pattern
- Turn the question into a heading, written the way a buyer would type it.
- Answer it in the first one or two sentences, in plain language, with no preamble.
- Follow with the reasoning, steps or evidence in short paragraphs and lists.
- Close the section with the one caveat that matters, so the answer is honest.
Make each section stand alone
A passage should make sense if it is lifted out of the page. Avoid "as mentioned above" and unexplained abbreviations. Name the thing you are talking about in every section rather than saying "it" or "this approach".
Show who wrote it and when
Add a named author, a visible updated date and a short line about who reviewed the content. These are the trust cues a person would look for, and they cost nothing.
Step 4: Add evidence a model can verify
An assistant is cautious about repeating claims it cannot check. Give it things it can.
- Specific, sourced facts. State what you did, measured or observed, and link the primary source when you cite someone else. Never invent figures. A page with three honest, specific statements beats one with ten vague superlatives.
- Definitions and steps. Numbered steps and clear definitions are easy to extract and hard to misquote.
- Consistent facts across the site. Your company description, product names and key details should read the same on every page and profile. Contradictions lower the chance that a model repeats them.
- Structured data where it fits. Organization and Article markup, and FAQ markup on pages with real question-and-answer content, help machines read the page. Treat it as a clarity aid rather than a guarantee. We explain the limits in does FAQ schema still help with AEO?
Step 5: Create the pages ChatGPT wants for choice questions
Many valuable prompts are decisions: which option, which approach, which provider. If your site only has definitions, you will be cited for definitions and ignored when the buyer is close to deciding.
- A page that explains how to choose, with criteria written as a list rather than a sales pitch.
- A page that compares approaches honestly, including when your own approach is not the right one. Fair comparisons are cited more readily than promotional ones.
- A page that states how pricing works, even if it only describes the factors rather than exact fees.
- A page that answers the awkward question buyers actually ask, such as what can go wrong and how long it takes.
Do not mention competitors you cannot describe fairly. Where you compare, compare methods and criteria, not reputations.
Step 6: Get corroborated off your own site
When ChatGPT searches, it sees more than your website. It sees directories, review sites, articles, forums and profiles that describe you. If they say different things, or say nothing, a model has little reason to trust your own claims.
- Make your company description identical across your site, social profiles and business listings.
- Earn mentions in independent articles and communities your buyers read, by publishing something genuinely useful rather than asking for links.
- Keep reviews and listings current. Out-of-date profiles are a common source of wrong answers.
- Where an answer about you is wrong, fix the source it came from, not just your own page.
Step 7: Test weekly and log what changes
Citations move around, so a single check proves nothing. Run the same ten prompts every week, on the same day, in fresh chats with search on. Log the date, the prompt, whether you were mentioned, whether you were linked and which pages were cited.
Links from ChatGPT typically carry a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter, so look for that in your analytics to see visits that follow a citation. Keep expectations realistic: the volume is often small at first, and the value is in the quality of the visitors and in the trend. Our guides on how to track AEO and on measuring AEO and AI search visibility show how to set this up properly.
A four-week plan you can start on Monday
Week 1: baseline and access
Run the ten-prompt baseline. Fix robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, check status codes and rendering on your top ten pages, and confirm none are set to noindex.
Week 2: rewrite the top pages
Pick the three pages that should answer your highest-value prompts. Rewrite each with a question heading, a direct answer in the first two sentences, short sections that stand alone, a named author and a visible date.
Week 3: fill the decision gap
Publish one "how to choose" page and one honest comparison. Add real FAQ content to the pages where buyers ask follow-up questions.
Week 4: corroborate and retest
Align your descriptions across profiles and listings, pitch one useful piece to an independent publication, and rerun the baseline. Compare the result with week 1 and decide what to double down on.
Common mistakes that keep pages out of ChatGPT
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident while meaning to block training crawlers.
- Hiding the answer behind long introductions, tabs or scripts.
- Chasing one prompt. Answers vary by user, so judge a set of prompts over several weeks.
- Writing for the engine instead of the buyer. Thin, repetitive pages written only to be cited tend to be neither cited nor useful.
- Treating it as a one-off project. Sources, models and answers change, so the work is a loop, not a launch.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
There is no guaranteed timeline. Fixing crawler access and rewriting a page can show up in test prompts within weeks, but results vary by topic and competition, and answers change over time. Track a fixed prompt set weekly rather than expecting a switch to flip.
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
No. Citations in ChatGPT's answers are not something you can buy as a placement. You earn them by being a clear, trustworthy and retrievable source for the question.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is a separate decision about training data. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are different crawlers according to OpenAI's documentation, so you can make a choice about training without blocking the crawler used for search. Check your robots.txt so you know exactly what you have set.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional and cheap to add, but do not rely on it. A clear, crawlable page with a direct answer matters far more than any single file.
Why does ChatGPT cite my competitor instead of me?
Usually one of three reasons: their page states the answer more directly, other sources corroborate them, or your page cannot be retrieved. The baseline in step 1 shows which of these applies to you.
Is this the same as ranking on Google?
The foundations overlap, since good content and crawlability help everywhere, but citations are a separate result to measure. A page can rank well and still not be quoted if it does not state the answer clearly.
